Social Studies Unit 3: Revolution

The unit on the American Revolution is highlighted by the final unit project. This particular project is done whole class, but is similar to other projects in that students will work together researching a certain topic from the Revolutionary period, and presenting that as a video. You can find more information about this project by going to a post in the main pages of my blog HERE. Also, the overview of the video project, with scoring rubric, can be accessed HERE.

Unit 3 starts with a lesson on life under British rule. Throughout the lesson, we will refer to a printed version of this timeline found on the PBS site, in a series called Liberty! Chronicles of the Revolution.

First off, students will play Mission US, a high quality game that puts them in the shoes of Colonists.
Mission US offers teaching guides, and even a downloadable version of the game (79 mb total download for pc).

Mostly we will discuss life under British rule through the playing of Mission US, as well as readings done in class.

Next, we will move to the causes and beginnings of the Revolutionary War. The remainder of this unit will be done primarily through a video project. Students will be placed in groups, to research and create a short (2-4 minute) video skit that includes a newscast, a recreation, and a summary. The topics available for study include (and this last can be expanded if students find another topic of interest (I have included links to more information on these topics as available, just click the topic you want to go to its page):

The video must include enough segments for groups of students to contain 3-4 students. For my classes, that usually comes out to 6-9 topics. Some students may decide to participate in more than one video segment, but will primarily be responsible for the accuracy of research and presentation in their assigned group.
